-I can see that picture of what we were at an earlier stage may not be
recognisable and cannot, certainly, be pleasing to contemplate in later life.
But we must not repudiate it, for it is a proof that we have really lived… -

Marcel Proust

We present the first individual exhibition at el Chico of Elián Stolarsky (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1990), País extraño IV (Foreign country IV).

Elian Stolarsky's work confronts us with an abstract and darkly familiar past. Fragment by fragment, moving closer and further away, allusions to foreign territories and bodies overlap and fit together. Tracing line by line the Spanish Civil War’s photographs by the artist Robert Cappa, the artist's gestures function as bricks composing an image beyond our reach. The cloths reveal their seams as scars in which we recognize movements, postures, wounds, faces and bodies documenting  an inherited violence, challenging to build a fabric of memories where images of our past, present and future can be exchanged.

This first individual exhibition by Elián Stolarsky comes after her inclusion in the second edition of our graduates’ exhibition Adentro/Afuera. Our approach to Elián's work is emotional, but we find its social and political aspects afterward. Her work comes with a constant transformation that goes from the personal to the sociological; her practice does not have a political stance as a starting point, instead, it addresses a family and own history of what it means to be a perennial foreigner, welcoming and confronting the politics that this approach may raise.
